Women's Project - Istanbul
In December 2019 we visited The Balat Culture House, a project in Istanbul, which has been supporting vulnerable women for 20 years, and runs as a social enterprise. The centre has been led and supported by the local Soroptimists, and we heard about it through our friendship with Soroptimists GY.
The centre started in 1999 with a beautiful, but derelict building in a run-down area of Balat, Istanbul. They raised money to renovate the building, and began a small cafe there. As the years have passed, the area has gone up in the world, and is now one of the coolest parts of the city! The cafe provides participants with training and employment, and the public with a beautiful meeting space and delicious home-made food. They also have meeting rooms for hire, a learning centre, and arts exhibitions and events.
We were warmly welcomed, and got some great ideas for things we could do back in Norfolk.
